Ethos

In the late 1990s an oncologist in British Columbia created a dragon boat team from only breast cancer survivors. Its purpose was to see if the exercise of paddling would ward off a side effect of surgery called lymphedema. The benefits were so much greater. The team bonded through their shared experiences and desire to move beyond cancer.

Since then dozens of teams have formed across North America and Dragon boating has become the fastest growing water sport.

At DBB we paddle three times a week. The Beaufort river is a perfect place to paddle with its (mostly) calm water, scenic views and abundant wildlife. We try to cater for paddlers of all abilities, with some practices reserved for the racing team and other practices designated recreational. We respect everyone in the boat, regardless of ability and new paddlers are always welcome. Everyone paddles according to their capability, and anyone can take their paddle out of the water and rest at any time.
